About the artwork
Part object, part work of art, this card by Invader retraces the artist's journey during his "invasion" of the Côte d'Azur. Indeed, the artist is celebrated the world over for his mosaic invasions of cities around the globe. To do this, he takes the aliens from the game Space Invaders, whose name he has appropriated, and imposes them on urban space, like invaders gaining ground. When unfolded, the map shows the city plan invaded by Invader's mosaics and aesthetics.
Expert opinion
This work is the result of one of Invaders' invasion projects, which has now invaded over 170 cities. It should be remembered, however, that not every invasion is accompanied by a map.
About the artist
Invader (b. 1969, France) is a leading figure in urban art. He is famous for his Space Invader-inspired mosaics, installed on the walls of over 80 cities worldwide. His work, both discreet and omnipresent, questions visual invasion, collective memory and urban cartography.
His visual language, based on the pixel as a basic unit, evokes geek culture, street art and the decorative arts. He also creates limited-edition works, such as this silkscreen, which translate his universe into more intimate formats.
“I kept the name of the game as an alias because it's a perfect definition of my work. I'm a space invader.”
