About the artwork
This photograph features a woman posing with a radio. This work belongs to the iconic photographic series by Iranian artist Shadi Ghadirian. Inspired by portraits from the Qajar era (1789-1925), this series features women dressed in traditional costumes, posing in the rigid attitudes typical of photographs from the period. However, an anachronistic element disturbs the scene: modern objects such as a radio, soda cans and sunglasses disrupt the composition. This discrepancy highlights the contrast between past and present, tradition and modernity, questioning the place of women in contemporary Iranian society.
Expert opinion
This photograph is typical of the work of Shadi Ghadirian, a major figure in committed contemporary photography.
About the artist
Shadi Ghadirian is an Iranian photographer born in 1974 in Teheran. A graduate of Azad University, she has established herself on the international art scene through her exploration of the tensions between modernity and tradition in Iranian culture in her photographic series. Her work is intimately linked to her identity as a Muslim woman living in Iran in 2015. She questions the role of women in society, exploring censorship, religion and modernity in Iran, but her art also deals with issues concerning women living in other parts of the world.
