About the artwork
Entitled Por de dos auto de la luna de miel (1981), this work by Julio Breff Guilarte is in a narrative figurative vein, close to a naïve or popular language. The scene depicts a bridal procession in a rural setting, with the figures facing each other, advancing through a lush landscape framed by dense vegetation. In the center, a bride and groom immediately catch the eye, surrounded by a group of figures with stylized, almost frozen faces, taking part in a collective staging. A garland of bells suspended in the sky introduces a festive and symbolic element, reinforcing the idea of celebration. On the right, a secondary scene with a figure seated at a table evokes an administrative or social formalization, creating a subtle tension between intimate ritual and institutional framework. The composition is structured in depth, with a path guiding the eye to a small house in the distance, anchoring the scene in a rural imaginary. Colors are vivid, volumes simplified, and the overall atmosphere is both joyful and slightly strange, almost dreamlike.
Expert opinion
This work, dated 1981, is particularly interesting in Julio Breff Guilarte's career, as it bears witness to an early phase, far removed from his later, more abstract and gestural developments. It reveals his roots in the Cuban folk figurative tradition, where narrative, symbolism and spontaneity take precedence over academic rigor. The strength of the piece lies in its ability to combine an apparent formal naiveté with a rich narrative construction. Behind the simplicity of the figures lies a reflection on social rituals, community and the staging of human relationships. The work functions almost as an open-air theater, with each character playing a precise role. As far as the market is concerned, early and unique works from this period are relatively rare, making them even more attractive to collectors. They provide a better understanding of the artist's evolution and the coherence of his language over the long term. In terms of conservation, particular attention should be paid to the condition of the canvas and the paint layer, typical of works from this period. If in good condition, this piece has real potential, both historically and aesthetically, particularly for a collector sensitive to the dialogue between naive art, popular narrative and singular artistic trajectories.
About the artist
Julio Breff Guilarte is a Cuban artist born in 1973 in Havana, where he lives and works. A singular figure on the Cuban contemporary scene, since 2000 he has been developing a body of work recognizable by its gestural energy, dense compositions and hybrid visual language, at the crossroads of abstraction, graffiti and figuration. Trained at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, one of Cuba's most prestigious art institutions, Breff belongs to a generation of artists who grew up in a context marked by the economic and political tensions of the Special Period. This context nourishes a practice in which spontaneity, material resourcefulness and a certain expressive urgency take center stage. His work is characterized by an accumulation of signs, forms and pictorial strata, combining fragments of figures, symbols, writing and abstract motifs. Surfaces are often saturated, worked in a dynamic of covering and erasing, evoking both urban walls and palimpsests. This approach lends his works an almost archaeological dimension, where each layer reveals a moment in the process. Breff explores notions of memory, organized chaos and identity, while leaving plenty of room for intuition and improvisation. Her free, nervous gesture is part of a contemporary pictorial tradition that dialogues with abstract expressionism, while remaining deeply rooted in the Cuban visual and cultural environment. The artist has exhibited in Cuba and abroad, notably in Europe and the United States. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and fairs, helping to assert her presence on the contemporary art scene.
