Julio Breff Guilarte

Julio Breff Guilarte is a Cuban artist born in 1973 in Havana, where he lives and works. A singular figure on the Cuban contemporary scene, since 2000 he has been developing a body of work recognizable by its gestural energy, dense compositions and hybrid visual language, at the crossroads of abstraction, graffiti and figuration. Trained at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, one of Cuba's most prestigious art institutions, Breff belongs to a generation of artists who grew up in a context marked by the economic and political tensions of the Special Period. This context nourishes a practice in which spontaneity, material resourcefulness and a certain expressive urgency take center stage. His work is characterized by an accumulation of signs, forms and pictorial strata, combining fragments of figures, symbols, writing and abstract motifs. Surfaces are often saturated, worked in a dynamic of covering and erasing, evoking both urban walls and palimpsests. This approach lends his works an almost archaeological dimension, where each layer reveals a moment in the process. Breff explores notions of memory, organized chaos and identity, while leaving plenty of room for intuition and improvisation. Her free, nervous gesture is part of a contemporary pictorial tradition that dialogues with abstract expressionism, while remaining deeply rooted in the Cuban visual and cultural environment. The artist has exhibited in Cuba and abroad, notably in Europe and the United States. Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and fairs, helping to assert her presence on the contemporary art scene.
