About the artwork
With Patience and Bit of Luck, created in 2021, Jan Kaláb continues his exploration of organic abstraction, color gradients, and spatial perception through a minimalist yet highly immersive composition. The artwork is composed of two floating biomorphic forms, painted in smooth chromatic transitions ranging from deep blue to vibrant pink-red tones. Suspended slightly away from the wall thanks to their hand-made shaped wooden supports, the elements appear almost sculptural, creating subtle shadows and a strong sense of physical presence within space. Jan Kaláb’s practice is deeply rooted in the relationship between painting, object, and architecture. By abandoning the traditional rectangular canvas, the artist transforms color into volume and allows the work to interact directly with its surrounding environment. The soft gradients and curved shapes evoke both natural forms and digital aesthetics, creating a visual language that is simultaneously meditative and contemporary. This piece perfectly embodies Kaláb’s signature aesthetic: refined compositions where geometry, organic movement, and luminous color coexist in a delicate balance.
Expert opinion
This artwork belongs to an important mature period in Jan Kaláb’s career, during which the artist fully developed his distinctive shaped canvases and floating organic forms. These works have become highly recognizable within the contemporary abstract art scene and are particularly appreciated for their strong visual identity and sculptural presence. Kaláb occupies a singular position within contemporary abstraction due to his background in graffiti and urban art combined with a highly sophisticated painterly practice. His works successfully bridge minimalism, color field painting, and contemporary design aesthetics, making them especially attractive to collectors interested in both contemporary painting and spatial installation. Unique pieces of this scale and quality are particularly sought after, especially those featuring the artist’s iconic gradient transitions and irregular formats. The work demonstrates a refined mastery of color, balance, and materiality while remaining immediately identifiable as part of Jan Kaláb’s visual universe.
About the artist
