About the artwork

This work entitled Composition, created in 2010 by Vhils, is presented as a silkscreen on hand-enhanced paper, characteristic of the artist's practice at the time. The composition is organized around a fragmented face, constructed by superimposing images, textures and graphic signs, evoking photography, urban posters and the alteration of mural surfaces. The chromatic palette, dominated by intense reds, deep blacks and touches of blue, lends the whole a strong visual energy, while the effects of wear, tearing and superimposition create an impression of temporal stratification. The face, at once present and partially erased, seems to emerge from a set of visual layers, recalling Vhils' interventions in urban space, where the image is revealed by subtraction. The hand-work carried out on each copy reinforces the unique character of the work, despite the fact that it belongs to a limited edition of 100 copies, here numbered 47, and makes this piece part of a reflection on the reproducibility and alteration of the contemporary image.

Expert opinion

This work is a significant example of Vhils' work in the early 2010s, a period during which he gained international recognition for his visual language based on the erosion and memory of urban surfaces. The combination of a silk-screen base and manual interventions gives each piece a singularity appreciated by collectors, while maintaining an aesthetic coherence specific to the edition. The construction of the face through fragments and superimpositions reflects a strong conceptual approach, where identity is seen as an accumulation of traces and transformations. On the market, works from this period enjoy sustained interest, particularly for hand-enriched limited editions, which straddle the boundary between print and original work. The general condition of the work appears satisfactory in view of the images provided, with a framing adapted to the conservation of the paper, although direct examination remains recommended to confirm the integrity of the support and pictorial interventions. This piece will be of interest to collectors who are sensitive to contemporary street art practices and their transposition into the field of printmaking.
