About the artwork

Dressed in the famous Superman costume, Barack Obama is presented as a hero, his head held high in front of the American flag. This silkscreen by Mr. Brainwash is a literal and humorous illustration of the public image of the former American president. In 2008, Barack Obama made history as the first black president in the history of the United States. At the time, he was considered an emblematic and revolutionary figure of the Civil Rights Movement. This image was produced for the Art Basel: Miami Beach fair, sometimes accompanied by the text: "Rosa Parks sat, so that Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked, so that Barack Obama could run. Obama ran, so we could fly." (Rosa Park sat, so that Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked so that Barack Obama could run. Obama ran, so we could fly", which once again makes Barack Obama the effigy of this anti-racist movement.

Expert opinion

This silkscreen by Mr. Brainwash is typical of his work. In it, he reinvents popular codes and images to express a political opinion in a light-hearted yet engaging way.

About the artist

Mr. Brainwash, real name Thierry Guetta, is a contemporary artist who skilfully juggles street and pop art. Using his innovative style, he creates larger-than-life exhibitions, and doesn't hesitate to navigate between the different spheres of art, notably designing album covers for Madonna, Rick Ross and KYGO, or appearing in numerous films and TV shows. By appearing in one of the first documentaries to trace the history of street art, Exit Through the Gift Shop, he established himself alongside Banksy as one of the major artists in this discipline. Through his work, Mr. Brainwash aims to democratize art, opening it up to a diverse audience.

“What I want to bring to people is something they can smile at and have fun with. It's not about being funny or making fun, it's about being real and doing what I like.”
