About the artwork
This wooden sculpture is a miniature version of the famous coffins for which Paa Joe is renowned. Shaped like a shoe from the famous Nike brand, the work transforms and opens up, revealing the hollow of the sculpture. Paa Joe combines tradition in the use of wood and modernity in the choice of a Nike shoe to create a piece that is both articulated and innovative.

About the artist
Born in 1947, Paa Joe is a pioneering Ghanaian coffin artist. He began his apprenticeship in 1960 in his uncle Kane Kwei's workshop in Teshie, and launched his own business in Nungua in 1977. Paa Joe is renowned for his artistic coffins, which are exhibited in prestigious museums such as the British Museum in London, the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York. In 1989, he took part in the exhibition "Les Magiciens de la terre" at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Paa Joe is also featured in the documentary "Paa Joe & The Lion" by British filmmaker Benjamin Wigley.
