NEED 18

NEED 18 is a visually powerful example of contemporary black-and-white photographic portraiture, distinguished above all by its strong use of chiaroscuro and its unusually intimate composition. One of the work’s greatest strengths is the way Lescuyer avoids an overly descriptive image. Much of the information is deliberately withheld: the surrounding environment disappears, the body becomes partially abstracted, and the viewer is left primarily with a face, a gaze and the sensation of physical proximity. This restraint gives the photograph its psychological intensity. The image also benefits from a strong formal construction. The illuminated face acts as the focal point within an almost entirely dark field, while the blurred foreground creates depth and directs the eye toward the subject. The result sits interestingly between documentary photography and a more subjective, almost cinematic approach to portraiture. As an edition of 15, with this example numbered 3/15, the work retains the accessibility characteristic of photographic editions while remaining relatively limited. Lescuyer’s recognition as a 2019 Bourse du Talent laureate in the Reportage category, followed by the presentation of her work at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, provides useful institutional context for assessing her practice. Overall, NEED 18 is particularly compelling for the combination of technical restraint, emotional intensity and ambiguity: rather than explaining its subject, the photograph creates a space in which the viewer is invited to encounter and interpret them.
