About the artwork
Reusing Jacques-Louis David's famous painting of the emperor "Bonaparte crossing the Great St Bernard", Captain Co once again seizes upon art history, updating it and blending it with his astrological universe. The artist grids the canvas with bees, an imperial symbol of resurrection and immortality, which he pairs with the eagle, an emblem of Roman origins, the founding city of civilization. In the lower part of the canvas, the viewer also perceives the profile of another great victor from antiquity, Julius Caesar, recognizable by his laurel wreath. He thus raises the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte to that of Julius Caesar, two undisputed conquerors.
Expert opinion
Emblematic of Captain Co's artistic universe, this canvas draws on his knowledge of art history, which is dear to his work.
About the artist
Originally from Alsace, Captain Co has followed a rich artistic path that has taken him to Strasbourg, Lille, Lyon, Beirut (Lebanon), Florence (Italy) and finally Paris. A graduate in art conservation and restoration, it was during his studies that he discovered his passion for practical art, notably through the study of art history and oil painting copying.
His personal creation is mainly based on acrylic paint and charcoal drawing. Her painting is constantly evolving, always guided by a deep interest in the contrasts between light and shadow, calm and storm, visible and invisible. This duality manifests itself in the subtle interplay of brushes and knives on his canvases.
Although his artistic journey began under the influence of pop art, he soon moved towards a more figurative, academic expression. He strives to capture the viewer's attention with contemporary, colorful interpretations of classic works by the great masters of art history.
