About the artwork
This work is a photographic triptych depicting a woman wearing a cropped jacket and shorts in three different poses. Each photo is accompanied by a sign bearing the title of the work, “Make Some Noise.” The woman photographed here is none other than the artist herself, conveying a feminist message. The signs and the voice recorder—symbols of amplifying women’s voices in their quest for equality—encourage women to actively engage in feminist debates and continue the fight. Sarah Maple’s artistic commitment has its roots in her childhood, as well as in her inspiration drawn from Andy Warhol, an artist who also challenged artistic and social conventions.
Expert opinion
Like the work of the socially conscious artist Sarah Maple, this one-of-a-kind piece is deliberately provocative, with the aim of making feminist demands heard loud and clear.
About the artist
Born in the UK in 1985 to a Muslim mother and Christian father, Sarah Maple graduated in Fine Art from Kingston University in 2007. Her work, influenced by her own experience as a Muslim woman in the South of England, tackles questions of gender, sexuality and religion with humor and provocation. Her propensity for self-staging adds a personal and introspective dimension to her work. In 2007, Sarah won the "4 New Sensations" award supported by renowned gallery owner Charles Saatchi, which aims to highlight the most imaginative talent among UK Fine Art students. This recognition marked the start of his artistic career. After Tate Britain, New Art Exchange and Golden Thread Gallery, Sarah Maple published her first book in 2015, You Could Have Done This, a collection of works. In 2019, her first solo exhibition is presented in the United States, "Thoughts and Prayers", at Untitled Space in New York, exploring topical political and social issues such as immigration.
“I think what really fascinates me is thinking about what's happening in the world or the major political issues related to feminism.”
