About the artwork
This NFT, which is one minute and twenty-eight seconds long, shows the gradual explosion of a section of a wall. The video’s framing, with its slight vignette effect, remains constant throughout the sequence and focuses on the facade of a building. Starting with the word “life” inscribed on the facade, the explosion quickly transforms the word into “lifeless.” The use of explosives in Vhils’ work was first introduced in 2010 in the “Detritos” series, which reflects the economic damage caused by the 2008 financial crisis. Following scalpels, scissors, drills, and jackhammers, the use of explosives is a logical extension of his bas-relief sculpting technique applied to walls. By filming his videos with a high-speed digital camera, Vhils highlights the poetic intensity of the explosion through slow motion. Accompanied by the long, muffled sound of the explosion, this work symbolizes the transition from life to death, reflecting the tragic reality of armed conflicts.
Expert opinion
In this NFT, which is part of a series dedicated to the explosions he creates, Vhils highlights the beauty of his technique.
About the artist
Alexandre Farto, alias Vhils, Portuguese artist born in 1987. Lives and works in Lisbon (Portugal). He became active in Lisbon's graffiti scene in the early 2000s. In 2008, Banksy invited him to take part in London's Cans Festival, where his work was immediately recognized and celebrated as one of the most innovative on the urban scene in recent years. Today, he exhibits at major institutions around the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, and the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, which is devoting its first monographic exhibition to him in the United States in 2020. Until September 2022, the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) in Lisbon is dedicating a monumental, immersive exhibition to him, entirely focused on video. In it, the artist develops a new language, presenting an image of the city in slow motion.
“I worked on the walls to reveal the city’s inner workings, digging into it from the inside. Sculpting the city, just as the city sculpts us, and just as we sculpt it as well.”
