About the artwork

Against a rich background of yellow, blue and green, two figures stand out, their bodies entirely covered with transparent lighters. They contain rolled-up pieces of paper that reveal fragments of text, like so many secret messages. The colored tips of the lighters compliment the chromatic and formal composition of the work, which is reminiscent of the symbolism of Gustave Klimt's paintings. Yet the presence of these discarded objects breaks with his gold-leaf tradition in favor of a contemporary culture of reuse, and participates in the elaborate dialogue between cultures. The brushstrokes and characters combine references to Jean-Michel Basquiat's neo-expressionist style with the reservoir of forms found in African art. At once a dialogue between different artistic influences and a bearer of imaginary messages, this work seems to intercede to reconnect the viewer with his or her fantasized correspondent.

Expert opinion

This work is representative of Abokou Sanaa KoKouvi's work, which combines numerous artistic references with great acuity.

About the artist

Born in 1984 in Lomé (Togo), Adokou Sanaa Kokouvi has been living and working in Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou) since 2010. The artist began his artistic adventure in 2003, training in painting, drawing and calligraphy, and drawing his inspiration from the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat and African culture. His work focuses on the neglected members of Burkinabé society, working to re-establish links between people. Highly acclaimed in Africa, the artist is now making inroads on the European scene, and has taken part in several group exhibitions in France.

“The giants of the art world don't overshadow young shoots; they provide fertile ground for the possible.”
