About the artwork
In the center of the work, two figures stand out in dialogue, their faces above a horizon line that divides the background in two. While the upper part is a luminous light yellow, the lower part features a dark, teeming ground on which two portraits stand out. They seem to exist as negatives of the first two figures, and serve to illustrate their inner worlds. The figure on the right is haloed by a sunburst that breaks with the dark tones of the background. The contrast between the colors recalls the idea of positive and negative energies coming together. The luminous figure that takes center stage here, overflowing its frame, is a message of hope against the threatening, negative forces that haunt the rest of the composition.
Expert opinion
Drawing its inspiration from the work of neo-expressionist Jean-Michel Basquiat and the reservoir of forms that is African art, this work is entirely representative of Abokou Sanaa Kokouvi's work.
About the artist
