About the artwork

Produced in 2014, Tracey Emin's I Promise to Love You is a poster printed on 250 gsm satin-finish paper, edited to 500 copies and published by Emin International in London, in the 70 x 50 cm format. The work takes up the artist's emblematic neon aesthetic, featuring a luminous white heart inside which is inscribed, in incandescent red, the handwritten phrase I Promise to Love You. The contrast between the deep black background and the vibrant glow of the line evokes the materiality of the genuine neon installations that Tracey Emin has been developing since the nineties. The signature and date appear at the bottom, reinforcing the piece's personal, autobiographical character. The heart motif, universal and immediately legible, becomes under the artist's hand a space of intimate commitment, oscillating between sincere declaration, vulnerability and emotional tension. The quality of the satin paper restores the chromatic intensity and illusion of the luminous halo, giving the image a strong visual presence despite its published status.

Expert opinion

I Promise to Love You is a continuation of Tracey Emin's confessional and emotional practice, for whom handwriting is a central vector of expression. Using the language of neon, a medium associated with advertising and urban space, the artist hijacks a public visual code to turn it into the medium of an intimate declaration. This tension between private sphere and public visibility is at the heart of his work. The 500-copy edition reflects a desire for wide distribution, while retaining a formal coherence with his original neon pieces. Published by Emin International, this poster benefits from a structured and recognized editorial framework. It will be of interest to collectors wishing to acquire a work representative of Tracey Emin's luminous, autobiographical universe, as well as to those interested in the way the artist has translated her neon installations into accessible printed formats, while preserving their expressive intensity.

About the artist

Tracey Emin is a British artist born in London in 1963, and associated with the Young British Artists movement that profoundly influenced the art scene in the UK in the nineties. Her largely autobiographical work explores themes of love, sexuality, vulnerability, loss and identity in a wide variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, neon, video, embroidery and installation. She achieved international recognition with emblematic works such as My Bed, presented in 1999 and now a symbol of radical confessional art. Handwritten language, often direct and emotionally charged, is a central element of her practice, particularly in her neon works, which translate intimate statements into luminous messages displayed in public spaces. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy in 2007, Tracey Emin has had major exhibitions in international institutions and her work is included in numerous public and private collections, confirming her essential role in the evolution of contemporary art centered on personal experience and subjectivity.
