About the artwork

Featuring a tagged brick wall, at first glance this photograph appears to capture an urban scene. However, close inspection of the image reveals a painted human figure cleverly camouflaged in the background. Like a chameleon, this man is none other than the artist himself. Nicknamed "the invisible artist" for his photo-performances, Liu Bolin produced the first series of this astonishing artistic approach in his studio in 2005. Concealed within his own works, he bears witness to the excesses of contemporary society, highlighting the excessive development of cities that tend to enclose the individual, rendering him invisible. Not limiting his discourse to China, where he was born and still lives today, the artist carries out his performances across the globe, highlighting the limits and dangers of urbanization on a global scale.

Expert opinion

This work, immortalizing the artist's performative practice, both poetic and anti-establishment, is part of his most famous series, "Hiding in the City".

About the artist

Born in 1973 in Shandong, China, Liu Bolin is an artist who lives and works in Beijing. A graduate of Shandong University of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China, he has since pursued an internationally acclaimed photography practice, notably through the series he began in 2005 entitled Hiding in the City, and has since become known as the "invisible man". His sculptural work also includes human figures made of electronic components. His work, whether photographic or sculptural, suggests a message of humanity in peril, dissolved in an urban, technological heap. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2017, the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne in 2018 and the Museo delle Culture in Milan in 2019.

“I've decided to blend into the environment. Some would say that I disappear into the landscape; I would say that the environment takes hold of me.”
