About the artwork

Composed mainly of shades of gray, this painting reveals the body of a woman wearing pink underwear. The colors are arranged in lines similar to the patterns found on bogolans, traditional Malian fabrics, whose intersections are highlighted with small colored cotton balls. Devoid of head and limbs, this body is a reinterpretation of the Venus de Milo, confronting the ancient model with elements of modern culture. Thus, the drapery covering her, characteristic of the Hellenistic period, is replaced here by a bikini bottom, and the techniques usually associated with the virtuoso treatment of drapery are substituted by this reminder of African craftsmanship. This idea of connection is reinforced by the weaving of the figure: form and background respond to each other, forming part of the same pictorial harmony.

Expert opinion

Here, Ibrahim Mallo appropriates the classic topos of art history to offer a contemporary version. The artist thus plays with Western fetishes while revalorizing the heritage of Malian culture.

About the artist

Born in 1986 in Bamako, Ibrahim Ballo is a Malian artist who graduated in Plastic Arts in 2012 from the Institut National des Arts du Mali and has held a Master's degree from the Balla Fasseke Kouyaté Multimedia Arts and Crafts Conservatory in Mali since 2017. The artist systematically echoes the world of weavers in which he grew up by adding weaving thread to his paintings. The artist's approach stems from a desire to revalorize a traditional know-how erased by the modern, colonizing textile industry. Imabriham Ballo was awarded the Sahm workshop prize at the Rencontre internationale de l'Art Contemporain in 2017, and his work has been exhibited extensively in Africa and Paris, notably by Galerie Chauvy as part of the AKAA (Also Known as Africa) fair in 2019.

“I seek to create a synthesis between the contemporary world and historical significance in our digitized universe, denouncing consumerism and societal problems.”
