About the artwork

Emile, ou le chemin de la gare (1974) is a remarkable etching and aquatint print by Bernard Bunch. The composition is based on an assertive geometric construction, structured by broad flat tints of color and highly textured areas. Deep reds, dense blacks, ochres and muted greens are organized in a rigorous balance, evoking a space on the border between abstract landscape and mental architecture. The upper part, punctuated by fine horizontal lines, contrasts with the grainy black mass of the lower part, typical of aquatint. The angular shapes interlock and respond to each other, suggesting movement and progression, echoing the idea of a journey or path evoked by the title. Printed in Paris by Éditions Emilio Jacometti, this print is part of a limited edition of 60 copies, this one numbered 27/60. The work is unframed and preserved in perfect condition, with intact colors and excellent textural legibility.

Expert opinion

This print is a fine example of Bernard Bunch's graphic work of the 1970s, a period during which the artist developed an abstract language that was both constructed and sensitive. The artist's mastery of etching and aquatint techniques is fully displayed here, with each texture playing a structuring role in the composition. The collaboration with Éditions Emilio Jacometti, a Parisian benchmark in printmaking, lends the work real editorial legitimacy. The limited edition, excellent state of preservation and formal coherence of the composition make Emile, ou le chemin de la gare a quality piece, particularly attractive to collectors of modern prints and French geometric abstraction.
