About the artwork
Ecstasy is a work created in 2010 by the FAILE art collective. This print, with a print run of 175, is produced here in acrylic and silkscreen ink in twelve colors on Lenox 100 paper and measures 60 × 90 cm. The composition features a reclining female figure, depicted in a dynamic, expressive posture, seemingly floating in a visual universe saturated with patterns, typographic fragments and graphic textures. The body is stylized in a drawing inspired by popular imagery and comic strips, while the background accumulates layers of bright colors, graphic elements and visual references reminiscent of urban posters and street collages. The contrasts between the black of the drawing, the red, blue and cream tones and the bursts of typography create a vibrant, rhythmic image, characteristic of the visual aesthetic developed by the collective.
Expert opinion
This work is a perfect illustration of FAILE's artistic approach, which draws inspiration from popular culture, advertising, comics and urban imagery to construct a dense, instantly recognizable visual language. The collective combines different techniques from collage, graffiti and silkscreen to create layered compositions that evoke the visual environment of major metropolises. In Ecstasy, the female figure becomes a contemporary icon surrounded by an abundant graphic universe of cultural references, symbols and visual textures. The multicolored silkscreen technique captures the rich superimpositions and graphic energy of FAILE's work. The collective's limited editions are particularly sought-after by urban art collectors, reflecting the duo's distinctive aesthetic and testifying to their major contribution to the evolution of street art into the field of contemporary art.
About the artist
FAILE is the name of a collective of painters, graphic designers and illustrators based in New York. It was founded in 1999 by Patrick McNeil, an American born in 1975, and Patrick Miller, a Canadian born in 1976. Together, they discovered New York's underground culture and developed a passion for it. The collective began their urban art project by photographing existing street art and graffiti on the streets of New York. Gradually, they learned the techniques of street art: silkscreening, stencils, collage, painting, sculpture, mosaic frescoes, and exhibited their work on city walls. FAILE's street art is more feminine and contrasts with the graffiti culture of the time. The collective is particularly inspired by vintage images, pop culture and comics, and is influenced by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein and Basquiat. FAILE travels and exports its street art all over the world, including Tokyo, Paris, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdam and Lisbon, where it creates collages, stencils and gigantic frescoes. Emblematic artists, their work is regularly honored by prestigious institutions such as London's Tate Modern, Strasbourg's Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, and New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
