About the artwork
Made up of several hundred discarded photos of anonymous identities, this dollar reminds us of the immense social structures in which individuals are immersed. Depersonalized, each portrait forms a mass in need of an identity, contributing anonymously to the strength of the whole. Taking up the world-famous, banal motif of the American dollar bill, Bai Yiluo questions Chinese identity in the face of Western capitalist identity.

This work by Bai Yiluo has all the characteristics that make his art so original. Through repetition, the use of everyday objects such as identity photos and the dollar, the artist questions the human condition and its depersonalization in contemporary culture.
