About the artwork

In an academic, even pedagogical approach, Xavier Veilhan works here on perspectives based on a photo, which he glues and superimposes on the cut-out cardboard. The subject itself seems unrealistic, giving the work a futuristic aspect reminiscent of twentieth-century modernist theories.

Expert opinion

Emblematic of Xavier Veilhan's artistic research, this work testifies to his desire to appropriate the theoretical training he has received, influenced by high technology.

About the artist

Born in 1963, Xavier Veilhan is a French visual artist based in Paris. Inspired by formal classicism, he has been working since the late 1980s on a body of work marked by high technology. A versatile graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, his work spans multiple media including sculpture, painting, installation, performance, video and photography. Developing his own geometry, he creates a dialogue between lines and curves, appropriating the contours of his subjects. His exhibitions question our perception and often generate an evolving, ambulatory space in which the public becomes an actor. Xavier Veilhan's work is often exhibited in public spaces, with his sculptures occupying numerous cities in France and abroad, including Paris, Stockholm, New York, Shanghai and Seoul. His work was exhibited at the Château de Versailles in 2008, and he represented the French pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. The artist is represented by Andréhn-Schiptjenko (Stockholm, Paris), Perrotin (Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Los Angeles), Nara Roesler (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, New York) and 313 Art Project (Seoul, Paris).

“My artistic production acts as an optical instrument, like a pair of binoculars or a telescope, that gives access to other spaces. What art and science have in common is their ability to reveal a dimension of the world, without trying to make it comprehensible.”
