About the artwork
This work is a close-up portrait of a woman with porcelain skin and luscious red lips. Wearing a red fédora and bare shoulders, this woman has all the hallmarks of a glamorous idol. The tight framing, monochromatic composition and choice of a seductive model are reminiscent of the silkscreens of Marilyn Monroe by Pop Art leader Andy Warhol. A calligraphic poem is added to the composition in the upper right-hand corner of the image. The tones used by Zhengjie Feng are often associated, in China, with vanity and superficiality. Although his portraits are seen as critical of society, the artist refrains from any satirical intent, placing them solely as witnesses to China's consumer society and its shortcomings. The woman's divergent gaze is also a consequence of this fast-paced consumer society, whose perpetual changes are impossible to see clearly.
Expert opinion
Zhenjie Feng's work, which has been internationally successful for over a decade, focuses exclusively on female portraits. This silkscreen print, produced in a limited edition of 50, has all the common features of the artist's most acclaimed works.
About the artist
Born in 1969 in Sichuan, Zhenjie Feng is a world-renowned artist who works and lives in Beijing. A graduate of the Sichuan Academy of Arts and the Southwest School of Art, he began his work inspired by the Shanghai posters of the 1930s, before adopting the style now known as Gaudi art, of which he is one of the pioneers. This style was inspired by Mian Zhu Nian Hua, used for Chinese New Year drawings, whose bright colors were supposed to represent the optimism of workers in the face of their living and working conditions. Critically acclaimed, Zhenjie Feng's portraits have been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including the China Gold exhibition at the Musée Maillol in Paris in 2008.
“Behind these images of women in my work, one can find first and foremost emotion; but also forms of criticism, provocation, introspection... A new way of understanding the world.”
