About the artwork
Faced with this work, the viewer's gaze rests on a double scene, that of a film crew in motion capturing that of a kiss. Using contrasting light, Johnny Dewe Mathews suggests the idea of movement with suggestive brushstrokes, guiding our gaze to the center of the composition. Like a photograph, it captures and documents the set of Stephen Poliakoff's 1993 film "Century", in particular the kissing scene between Miranda Richardson and Clive Owen.
Expert opinion
Representing a period of production in which Johnny Dewe Mathews drew inspiration from the film industry, this work captures a moment of filming and brings it to life.
About the artist
Born in London in 1946, Johnny Dewe Mathews trained as an architect. A few years after graduating from the Polytechnic of Central London, he worked as a portrait photographer in Mexico, exhibiting his portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in 1975. From 1977 onwards, he abandoned photography and devoted himself to drawing, then painting. His inspiration comes from observing groups of people working together, such as musicians, chefs and film crews. His work explores the visual forms that emerge from human movement and interaction.
His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions worldwide (London, Paris, Santa Fe, New York, Los Angeles and Italy).
