About the artwork
Caged Flower 2 develops a formal vocabulary centered on circularity and the tension between expansion and constraint. Made of deliberately oxidized steel, the work adopts a radial composition structured around a central core, whose intertwining metal elements seem both restrained and projected outwards. The form evokes a stylized flower enclosed within a geometric framework, creating a subtle dialogue between organicity and constructive rigor. The raw materiality of the metal, marked by rust and traces of assembly, lends the piece an almost archaeological dimension, while its symmetrical organization reinforces its visual balance. Suspended from the wall, the sculpture acts as a circular drawing in relief, its protruding stems producing a delicate, shifting play of shadows.
Expert opinion
This work illustrates Ron Arad's ability to condense his research into structure and deconstruction into a controlled, coherent format. The opposition between the apparent rigidity of the cage and the internal dynamics of the floral form creates a strong expressive tension. The particularly limited edition of six, including this artist's proof, reinforces its rare and desirable character. Caged Flower 2 is fully in line with the artist's dialogue between design, sculpture and formal experimentation, confirming his importance in the contemporary creative landscape.
About the artist
Ron Arad (b. 1951, Tel Aviv, Israel) is a designer, architect and artist internationally renowned for his experimental approach to materials and form. After studying at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, he moved to London, where he continued his training at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. In 1981, he and Dennis Groves founded the One Off studio, which rapidly became a laboratory for experimentation with recycled steel furniture and sculptural forms. His famous Rover Chair, made from a car seat integrated into a metal structure, marked the start of a career in which art, design and architecture intersected freely. In 1989, he founded Ron Arad Associates, developing projects in architecture, public installations and industrial design. His work is characterized by a constant tension between industrial rigor and formal freedom, combining advanced technologies and artisanal processes. His work can be found in the collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Today, Ron Arad is considered one of the leading figures in contemporary design, on the borderline between functional sculpture and experimental art.
