About the artwork
Showcasing a wall of posters from the 2007 Rencontres d'Arles festival, this photograph appears at first glance to capture an urban scene. However, close inspection of the image reveals a painted human figure cleverly camouflaged in the background. Like a chameleon, this man is none other than the artist himself, Liu Bolin. Nicknamed "the invisible artist" for his photo-performances, he conceals himself in his own works, and bears witness to contemporary society's tendency to enclose the individual, rendering him invisible. A photographer himself, he evokes the difficulty of getting noticed as an artist in an art market saturated with proposals.
Expert opinion
The artist's recognizable camouflage technique is featured at one of the world's leading photography festivals, Les rencontres d'Arles.
About the artist
Born in 1973 in Shandong, China, Liu Bolin is an artist who lives and works in Beijing. A graduate of Shandong University of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China, he has since pursued an internationally acclaimed photography practice, notably through the series he began in 2005 entitled Hiding in the City, and has since become known as the "invisible man". His sculptural work also includes human figures made of electronic components. His work, whether photographic or sculptural, suggests a message of humanity in peril, dissolved in an urban, technological heap. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2017, the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne in 2018 and the Museo delle Culture in Milan in 2019.
