About the artwork
Bryce Delplanque has created a still life based on a typical Asian spirit jar. Treated with a wide variety of motifs, the pot stands out from the rest of the composition, thanks to its azure blue color. Thanks to this contrasting pictorial treatment, the artist creates confusion in the viewer, whose gaze wanders between blur and sharpness.
The viewer is reminded of the black background used in Bryce Delplanque's other still lifes. The use of black and white creates a visual tension between the tradition of the classic still life and a more contemporary style. The colors and textures give the impression of collage, in the manner of Pop Art artists. Under his brushes, the objects seem to come alive and become characters in the painting. He places this tableware in a context where it takes on a new meaning. The subject of the work questions our relationship with nature and our everyday environment, and the strange and disquieting aspects of it.
Expert opinion
The color work on the alcohol jar adds a pop touch to a classically crafted composition. The canvas takes on an unexpected character.
