About the artwork
This work is composed of multitudes of multicolored abstract spots superimposed on a light background. The drips that escape are reminiscent of the spontaneity and speed of the urban art from which Mambo emerged. Here, the artist decides to explore the variations possible with a single gesture, a vertical brushstroke. Each vertical brushstroke in his paintings represents an element that functions through collectivity on the canvas.
Expert opinion
This work is characteristic of Mambo's Strokes series, which, with its single, repeated vertical brushstrokes, seeks to go beyond the flatness of the canvas to work on depth in an abstract universe.
About the artist
Born in Chile in 1969, Flavien Demarigny aka Mambo grew up in Latin America before moving to Paris, Los Angeles and Provence, where he now lives and works. He began his career in street art, joining several French collectives before establishing himself on the international scene. His style is characterized by a mix of organic lines, bright colors and graphic motifs inspired by both popular culture and contemporary art. The link between all Flavien "Mambo" Demarigny's creations is the quest for impact and balance, both visually and emotionally. Along the way, Mambo has developed three main abstract series: Brainology, Mindscapes and the Strokes. His first solo show was in Chicago in 1999. This was followed by exhibitions in Paris, notably at Magda Danysz and Agnès B, but also in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Geneva and Barcelona, during which Mambo honed his style and language.
