About the artwork
This sculpture depicts a character wearing glasses, dressed in a pink suit and a pink helmet, with the superhero-like appearance characteristic of the characters created by Edgar Plans. With simple yet expressive features, the figure is seated, holding a book. Titled “Olivia – The Power of Letters,” this work illustrates the importance of reading and learning as sources of imagination and power. Olivia is part of a series of five sculptures depicting characters reading, each with a different name. Here, Plans celebrates the idea that words and stories are tools capable of transforming the world.
Expert opinion
This work perfectly captures the essence of Edgar Plans's work, particularly his famous “Hero Animals”—characters with a childlike aesthetic that convey a social message.
About the artist
Born in 1977, Edgar Plans is a Spanish artist. He began his training in the studio of the painter José Maria Ramos, and went on to study art history at the University of Oviedo. His painting, particularly vivid and colorful, borrows as much from illustration as from urban art, digital art and popular culture. He is best known for his Animal Heroes, wide-eyed, mouse-masked characters who appear in seemingly light-hearted situations, but in reality address issues such as sexist and racist discrimination. His work is highly regarded on the art market, and has been exhibited in numerous Spanish galleries such as Galería Cornión in 2015, Alzueta Gallery in 2016 and Galería Ármaga in 2017.
