About the artwork
This piece features the BFF character, first introduced in 2016 at an exhibition at Central Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. Like Kaws' iconic "Companion" characters, the BFF figure has crossed eyes, gloved hands and oversized ears. However, he is distinguished by his blue fur and yellow nose, reminiscent of the aesthetic of Sesame Street characters. The BFF family continued to grow in the years that followed, with the addition of other colors.
Expert opinion
This piece is typical of KAWS's work, which fuses folk art and contemporary design.
About the artist
American artist born in 1974. Lives and works in New York (USA). Graduate of the School of Visual Arts, New York. Initially a graffiti artist, Kaws reappropriates the language of advertising in a style that blends Pop Art, comic strips and other cultural references. Through his practice, he plays on the boundary between academicism and commercial distribution, questioning the relationship between contemporary art and capitalism. His work can be found in the collections of the High Museum in Atlanta and the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
