About the artwork
Acrylic on wooden palisade with road sign, 100 × 120 cm, unique work. Created on an authentic urban support, this work combines paint and road signs to create a visual tension between the body in motion and the symbol of prohibition. Jérôme Mesnager's emblematic white character seems to be in dialogue with public space, between poetry, irony and gentle resistance. The work is in perfect condition, was acquired directly from the artist's studio and is accompanied by its certificate of authenticity.
Expert opinion
This work is a particularly accomplished example of Jérôme Mesnager's work on urban space and its codes. The use of a real road sign, integrated into a painted palisade, reinforces the contextual and conceptual dimension of the work, while maintaining a high degree of visual legibility. Dating from 2012, the artist's period of maturity, Ballon Interdit testifies to the coherence and strength of his plastic language. Its uniqueness, excellent state of preservation and direct provenance from the studio make it a museum-quality piece, attractive to both private and institutional collectors.
About the artist
Born in 1961, Jérôme Mesnager is a French artist. He entered the École Boulle in 1974, where he trained as a cabinetmaker. Five years later, he attended the comic strip classes taught by Yves Gotet and Georges Pichard at the École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré. In 1982, he was one of the founders of the Zig-Zag movement, a group of a dozen young artists who occupied the streets with graffiti and performance art. He was also part of the Figuration Libre movement in the early 1980s and the Parisian urban movement alongside artists such as Blek le rat, Miss.Tic and Jef Aérosol. In 1983, he created the Man in White, "a symbol of light, strength and peace", which he has reproduced all over the world, from the walls of Paris to the Great Wall of China. Off the street, his work is exhibited in institutions such as the Hôtel des Académies et des Arts in Paris in 2006.
