About the artwork

Drawn from an extensive investigation into Buddhist iconography, this composition adapts imagery originating from monumental narrative projects concerning the legendary disciples of Buddha. The square format features elongated, grotesque figures clad in patterned robes, positioned against a shimmering ground covered in a repeating geometric pattern. Skulls, demonic child figures, and disparate mythological elements crowd the lower register, reflecting the chaotic visual density characteristic of the studio's production. The application of a reflective metallic layer over the offset base introduces variable light-reactive qualities that shift according to the angle of illumination.

Expert opinion

This graphic edition exemplifies the artist's ongoing synthesis of classical Japanese iconography with contemporary commercial print techniques. By translating historical narrative painting into a standardized multiple format, the piece engages with questions of authorship, reproduction, and the transmission of religious motifs into secular popular culture.

About the artist

Japanese artist born in 1962. Lives and works between New York, Munich and Tokyo. Graduate of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. A disciple of Pop Art, he combines Japanese art with pop culture from the Land of the Rising Sun. Considered one of the most innovative artists of his time, Takashi Murakami's reputation extends far beyond the art world. Constantly blurring the boundaries between academic and commercial art, he promotes art as a veritable brand. He is best known for his collaborations with the world of luxury and fashion, including Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. His works have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Château de Versailles.
