About the artwork
This design features a stylized, centered rendering of the word "SCREAM!" in yellow with a green outline and a purple shadow, occupying the upper portion of the paper. Above that, the letters "V" and "A" appear in a similar style, in yellow and purple. Below the main text, the inscription “1983 West Ch” is visible, along with “EST” and “R” to the right. The word “Help!” is written above the “R” in “SCREAM!”. The work incorporates elements typical of early graffiti art, such as bubble letters, dynamic outlines, and a sense of movement. The use of markers on sketchbook paper suggests a spontaneous and direct approach to the artwork. In the lower left corner, enclosed in quotation marks, is the phrase “SOMEBODY SCREAM!”. The overall aesthetic reflects the visual language prevalent in New York’s urban art scene in the early 1980s.
Expert opinion
This work illustrates the transition of graffiti art from public spaces to more conventional artistic media during the 1980s. As a pioneer of the movement, Seen’s works on paper offer insight into the stylistic developments and thematic concerns of the era. The piece’s direct reference to “1983” and the inclusion of other tags such as “Quik” (likely QUIK, another prominent graffiti artist) firmly situate it within its historical context. The market for these historic graffiti works remains stable, as collectors value authenticity, provenance, and the artist’s reputation within the genre.
About the artist
Lin Felton aka Quik was born in 1958 in Queens, New York. He began tagging on Queens walls at the age of 10. It wasn't long before he was covering the grayness of the city's trains with his name and recognizable graffiti. An active member of the RTW Crew, he has worked alongside the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Futura. After graduating from Parsons School of Design, Quik was spotted by Dutch art dealer Yaki Kornblit, who encouraged him to move to Europe, where he would become a recognized artist. His work has become a fixture on the international scene, and has been incorporated into prestigious collections. His work can be found in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the Studio Museum of Harlem in New York, the Becht Collection, the Martin Visser Collection and the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
