Ingrid Baars

Born in Rotterdam in 1969, Ingrid Baars graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in the 1990s. She began her career as an illustrator and photographer, collaborating with Nike, Nikon and the Dutch National Ballet. In 2011, the artist produced Afrique, a series of portraits of black women representing the aesthetic codes of African cultures. Her photographic work is steeped in questioning the condition and representation of black women, while at the same time summoning the preciousness and aesthetics of fashion photography. The artist was awarded the Illustration Year Award in 1997. She has also been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide, including retrospectives at Rotterdam's Haute Photographie in 2022 and Chicago's NYCH Gallery in 2020.
