About the artwork

This full-length portrait of a woman dressed in white veils reuses certain codes of fashion photography and, thanks to digital tools, superimposes on them elements belonging to the vocabulary of fantasy. The floating, vaporous impression created by the model's white veils and crown elevate her to the status of a divinity. Drawing inspiration from the work of fashion designer Iris van Herpen, Ingrid Baars invites us to rediscover the topos of the Venus, goddess of love and feminine beauty, through a hybridization of African culture and Western fashion. By creating such an encounter, the artist seems to be questioning Western aesthetic codes and promoting the representation of black women in art.

Expert opinion

This work reveals the refinement of Ingrid Baars' compositions and her mastery of photographic tools. The artist proposes a personal version of the representation of black women, far removed from Western clichés and fetishes.

About the artist

Born in Rotterdam in 1969, Ingrid Baars graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam in the 1990s. She began her career as an illustrator and photographer, collaborating with Nike, Nikon and the Dutch National Ballet. In 2011, the artist produced Afrique, a series of portraits of black women representing the aesthetic codes of African cultures. Her photographic work is steeped in questioning the condition and representation of black women, while at the same time summoning the preciousness and aesthetics of fashion photography. The artist was awarded the Illustration Year Award in 1997. She has also been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide, including retrospectives at Rotterdam's Haute Photographie in 2022 and Chicago's NYCH Gallery in 2020.

“I realized that I could have a real impact, through my art, on elevating the beauty and strength of black women.”
