Z-Serpentin

WXYZ is a French painter and sculptor born in Paris in 1980. Emerging from the Parisian graffiti scene, he has developed a singular visual language centered on the transformation of the last four letters of the alphabet W, X, Y and Z which have become both his signature and the foundation of his artistic research. Rather than treating letters as a means of communication, WXYZ uses them as abstract structures through which he explores rhythm, color, geometry, and form. Since painting his first walls in the mid-1990s, the artist has continuously pushed the boundaries between graffiti, painting, and sculpture. His compositions oscillate between legibility and abstraction, reflecting a fascination with typography while inviting viewers to engage with shape beyond language. Acrylic, wood, concrete, ceramic, and other materials become vehicles for a practice that remains deeply rooted in the energy of urban art while expanding into contemporary fine art. During the Covid-19 lockdown, WXYZ introduced a new chapter to his practice by creating a series of minimalist painted wooden figurines inspired by construction toys and modular forms. These playful sculptural characters extend his long-standing interest in simplification, geometry, and the expressive potential of elementary shapes, reinforcing the dialogue between two- and three-dimensional works. Today, WXYZ's work continues to bridge graffiti culture and contemporary abstraction. Through an ever-evolving visual vocabulary, he transforms letters into universal forms, demonstrating how the language of the street can evolve into a refined and highly personal artistic practice.
