About the artwork
The black mass sitting with its back to a gray fir tree, feet together, represents LUV, a character characteristic of the artist's work. With his eyes fixed on the viewer, he creates a strong bond with his beholder, who is himself being watched. LY emphasizes his emotions through his imaginary alter-ego, which here seems to address themes of solitude and waiting.
Expert opinion
The LUV character is emblematic and central to LY's work.
About the artist
Born in 1981, LY is a Japanese artist influenced by the murals of Tokyo, the city in which she grew up and now lives. Passionate about painting since childhood, she became interested in urban art before studying at the Beaux-Arts and starting to work as an artist. Working exclusively in black, white and gray in a graphic style, she uses smooth planes of color with clean edges. Her works depict the streets and forests of her childhood through her character LUV, a shadow of her own emotions and memories. Internationally recognized, her murals can be found in Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, France and the United States. She is taking part in the Urban Art Fair (Paris) and is participating in a solo exhibition at the SAI gallery (Tokyo, 2022).
