About the artwork

Created in 2004, Untitled (ACT Portfolio) is a vivid example of Cecily Brown’s dynamic, gestural approach to figuration and abstraction. The lithograph showcases her signature energetic brushwork, where bodies, movement, and painterly marks dissolve into one another. With its layered strokes in earthy reds, blacks, and greys, the composition evokes a sense of chaos, sensuality, and narrative fragmentation, hallmarks of Brown’s visual language. Printed and published by Gemini G.E.L., one of the most respected print studios in the United States, this edition features both the studio’s blindstamp and inkstamp, confirming its authenticity. The work captures the expressive force of Brown’s paintings while translating her spontaneity into the medium of printmaking.

Expert opinion

Works from Cecily Brown’s ACT Portfolio are highly valued within her printmaking practice, as they capture the intensity and spontaneity of her large-scale paintings in a more intimate format. Printed by the renowned Gemini G.E.L., these editions are considered some of her strongest graphic works due to the technical excellence and collaborative process of the studio. The limited edition of 120 contributes to their desirability, and Browns’s market has shown notable stability and long-term growth, especially for early 2000s works. Collectors appreciate the combination of gestural abstraction, figurative echoes, and emotional depth, a signature style that has positioned Brown as one of the most influential painters of her generation.

About the artist

Cecily Brown (born 1969) is a British-born, New York–based painter celebrated for her energetic fusion of abstraction and figuration. Raised in London, she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art before moving to New York in 1994, where she quickly emerged as one of the most influential artists of her generation. Brown’s work is characterized by vigorous brushwork, sensual surfaces, and compositions that oscillate between recognizable forms and fluid gestures. Drawing inspiration from the traditions of Abstract Expressionism, Baroque painting, and contemporary visual culture, she creates dense, emotionally charged images that explore themes of desire, excess, the body, and the subconscious. She rose to prominence in the late 1990s, becoming one of the key figures of the resurgence of painterly abstraction in New York. Brown has exhibited widely in major international institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Tate Britain, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Her paintings and works on paper are held in numerous prestigious collections, and her expressive, tactile style continues to influence younger generations of painters. Today, Cecily Brown is recognized as one of the most important contemporary artists redefining the boundaries of gesture, narrative, and abstraction.
