About the artwork
Against an orange background stands a woman with an exposed bust and lips covered in make-up. Her half-visible body seems to be in motion, as if knocking on the door that would constitute the work. Maerten's style is reminiscent of "Bad Painting", which emerged at the end of the twentieth century in reaction to minimal and conceptual art deemed too intellectual. Marginal punk and rock cultures became sources of inspiration for these artists. This colorful work, reminiscent of cartoons and comic strips, is fully in this vein. Its wooden support also evokes the tradition of religious icons. Here, however, the saintly figure is revisited by the fresh colors and the presence of this clothed woman.
Expert opinion
This work is undeniably reminiscent of the work of Keith Harring and Robert Combas, both associated with the "Bad Painting" style of the late 20th century. The originality of the wooden support and its attractive price make it a real collector's item of choice.
