About the artwork
This composition features a yellow cat, characterized by its broad smile and small white wings, appearing to float or leap through a dense arrangement of green foliage. The cat occupies the right side of the frame, rendered with bold black outlines and flat color application, characteristic of the artist’s style. Behind the leaves in the foreground and the central feline figure, a simplified urban landscape appears beneath a light blue sky. In the background, a recognizable architectural landmark—the Eiffel Tower—is depicted in monochromatic gray, suggesting distance and perhaps a feature of the Parisian landscape. Beneath the tower, a structure with a blue roof and gray walls is visible, further anchoring the scene in an urban setting. The foreground is dominated by large, stylized green leaves, varying in shade, which partially obscure the background elements and frame the central action, creating a sense of depth. The artist’s signature, “M. CHAT...,” appears in black in the lower-left quadrant, partially integrated into the green foliage.
Expert opinion
Mr. Chat occupies a unique position within the contemporary street art movement, having developed a distinctive and instantly recognizable visual language. His work, characterized by its accessibility and optimistic tone, has attracted a broad audience beyond traditional art collectors. The artist’s transition from ephemeral street interventions to more permanent studio works, such as this one, reflects a common trajectory for successful street artists. The market for his works remains stable, driven by the enduring appeal of his character and his association with urban culture.
About the artist
Thoma Vuille, known by his artistic pseudonym M. Chat (or Monsieur Chat), is a Franco-Swiss street artist born in 1972. He began his artistic career in Orléans, France, in 1997, where the character of the smiling yellow cat first appeared on walls and in public spaces. The character, often depicted with wings or in various playful poses, quickly became recognizable and spread to many cities in France and abroad. Vuille’s work is characterized by its accessibility and positive imagery, aiming to bring joy and a sense of wonder to urban environments. His practice primarily involves painting directly on walls, but he also produces works on canvas, prints, and other media that translate his distinctive style into collectible formats. The artist’s identity was initially kept anonymous, adding to the mystery of the M. Chat phenomenon, although he was eventually unmasked in 2007. His career includes participation in numerous urban art festivals and exhibitions, solidifying his position within the contemporary street art movement.
