About the artwork

This painting features four stylized female figures, dressed in corsets and colorful lingerie, wearing animal-like or superheroine masks. Their lips, exaggeratedly luscious and highlighted in bright pink or dark red, become the central feature of their faces, reinforcing a blend of eroticism and caricature. The pink background unifies the composition and accentuates the theatrical, playful aspect of the scene.

Expert opinion

Through simplified lines and bold colors, the artist plays on codes of seduction, fetishism and popular imagination, while establishing an ironic distance. The work oscillates between provocation and humor, questioning the representation of the female body, its attributes of power and contemporary stereotypes.

About the artist

Born in Toulouse in 1973, Miss Van is one of the pioneers of the female urban art scene. Beginning to paint in the early 1990s, her characters, inspired by dolls and comic-book pin-ups, were noticed for how different they were from the graffiti painted by the male urban scene at the time. In the 2000s, his dolls were depicted with their eyes closed. This act was synonymous with introspection for the artist and became Miss Van's trademark. Her universe was then defined, oscillating between burlesque fantasies and tortured dreams. Her work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including Openspace Gallery in Paris in 2018, Soze Gallery in Los Angeles in 2013 and Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Berlin in 2008.

“"In life, I'm quite fascinated by ambiguous people. Like most people, I'm full of confusion. So I like to express this in my paintings. When I have an image in mind, there are always several feelings that come to me at the same time." - Miss Van on her practice”
