This photograph shows a shirtless man lying on a bed. We can't see him clearly because the image is not very sharp, which is characteristic of Georges Tony Stoll's work. His work is neither autobiographical, romantic nor psychological. Faces are masked, hidden, hooded, averted or off-camera, making his images anonymous and "forcing those who see them to be confronted with an experience of strangeness".

About the artist
Born in Marseilles in 1955, Georges Tony Stoll is a French artist renowned for his eclectic practice encompassing painting, photography, video, collage, drawing and installation. A graduate of the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille (ESBAM), he was influenced by teachers such as Joël Kermarec and Tony Grand. In the early 1990s, Stoll came to prominence for his photography, although his work also explores what he calls the "territories of abstraction" through various media. He has taken part in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, including at the Palais de Tokyo (2023), the Centre Pompidou (2003), Villa Medici in Rome (2010) and White Cube (2000). His work is also part of a number of prestigious collections, including the Pinault Collection, the Agnès b. Collection, the Winterthur Fotomuseum and the Centre Pompidou.
