About the artist
Born in Los Angeles in 1958, Kenny Scharf is an artist who lives and works in the United States. After graduating from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1980, he quickly became close to Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. An emblematic figure who helped create a link between the contemporary art world and that of urban art and graffiti, he developed a unique street art style that he described as "Pop Abstract Surrealism". In 1981, he exhibited at the Fun Gallery, and in 1985 created installations for the New York Palladium nightclub with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Since then, Kenny Scharf has exhibited his work all over the world, enriching the permanent collections of many renowned museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 2023, he and Futura participated in a fresco exhibited at the Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris) on the occasion of the Basquiat x Warhol exhibition.
“I call it Abstract Pop Surrealism. My style is a dangerous escape from reality. For me, it represents the evolution of man, who doesn't give in to the aquarium tout court, who doesn't become a 'fish in water'.”
