About the artwork
On this large aluminum plate, a rich palette of colors blends to form a total abstraction that leaves room for interpretation. Somewhere between graffiti, photography, paint splattering and brushing, Cédric Bouteiller emphasizes the materiality of his production. While he proposes a complex interplay of textures, the rain of white spots across the surface brings a certain depth to the composition; in the manner of Jackson Pollock, the artist reuses the codes of action painting and brings them up to date. Straddling the early and late twentieth century, he moves back and forth between the artistic references of contemporary art, from the early American Expressionists to street artists, via the lyricism of Zao Wou-Ki's abstraction. By marking his work with an aerosol can, a symbol of urban art, Cédric Bouteiller inscribes it in a highly contemporary context.
Expert opinion
This work, part of a period of artistic maturity for Cédric Bouteiller, is strongly influenced by his universe: a rich color palette, the use of graffiti and the cleverly thought-out "visual excess".
About the artist
Born in Rognac (France) in 1970, Cédric Bouteiller began painting by following "his destiny" while studying philosophy and fine arts in Aix-en-Provence. Now based in Paris, the world-renowned multi-disciplinary artist is part of the street art movement. His desire to create was triggered by his discovery of the greatest abstract artists, such as Zao Wou-Ki, Antoni Tàpies and Pierre Alechinsky of the CoBra group. Working with aluminum plates as a support, he combines different techniques such as painting, collage, photography and graffiti. He draws inspiration from the world of comic books, street art, popular culture and Pop Art, and reworks them. He likes to stage urban spaces, following the principle of "retinal image bombardment" of the mass media and the effervescence of big cities like New York or Shanghai. Over the course of his career, he has moved towards abstract work, in line with the amplification of images and the visual pollution of the modern world to the point of saturation.
Cédric Bouteiller has taken part in numerous international solo and group exhibitions in Paris, New York, Brussels, Mykonos and London. He is notably present at Art Basel Miami in 2016 or more recently at Urban Art Fair Paris in 2019.
