About the artwork

Somewhere between a chess set and a children's coloring book, Pedrita Studio reuses the codes of azulejo, the traditional Portuguese ceramic. On a large sheet of Manila paper, a variety of unique watercolor motifs are assembled, which, when placed side by side, form a face if the viewer moves away from them. Plant, geometric and undefined motifs intermingle, as do indications of coloring (light tones, whites, bluish whites, etc.). The title, Tile Sketch #3, makes it clear that the viewer is looking at a preparatory work. This work, in the wake of other studio productions, is taken from a photograph found by chance, illustrating an unknown moment in life. Here, the viewer witnesses an aesthetic reflection on questions of identity, image reproduction and portraiture, based on traditional craft techniques rooted in their national culture. In assimilating this almost haphazard assemblage technique, a more contemporary notion is attached: that of photographic pixelation. In short, a reinterpretation of the medium of inspiration through a completely different medium.

Expert opinion

This preparatory work is an undeniable witness to the artists' artistic reflection, between the intimacy of the artists' thoughts and the distance of the anonymous subject. It follows in the artistic footsteps of the Lost and found exhibition presented in 2018 and the Rita Hayworth series exhibited in 2021 at the Underdogs gallery in Lisbon, echoing some of the motifs used here.

About the artist

Pedrita is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Lisbon, founded in 2005 by Rita João and Pedro Ferreira. Both Portuguese, they studied Design at the University of Architecture in Lisbon. The duo, who have already collaborated in the past as part of the teams at the Italian artistic residency Fabrica, share a common passion for materials and their transformation. They are particularly interested in working with tiles, an activity inherited from a strong Portuguese craft culture. The Underdogs gallery in Lisbon has already presented several monographic exhibitions by the studio since 2015.

“For us, these analog images found by chance in the various places of our daily lives contain details and compositions that we appreciate and [...] we considered a correspondence with the history of the material we use in our artistic practice and crossed the analog with the hand-refined digital to create a series of new abstract-figurative panels.”
