About the artwork
This work by Hank Willis Thomas plunges into the social and political history of the 1936 Olympic Games, through the figure of Jesse Owens. The sprinter, a hero in the fight against segregation, is depicted in full swing, dressed in red and white collaged clothing, against a blue background evoking the colors of the American flag. The print, produced in nine layers of UV ink, recreates the dynamic texture of the original work currently on display in Paris, host city of the 2024 Games. This piece celebrates sport as a powerful vector for social change and human unity.
