About the artwork
With The Wrinkles of the City, Action in Shanghai, Shi Li Work in Progress, China, created in 2010, JR continues his exploration of memory, aging, and urban transformation through his landmark series The Wrinkles of the City. The artwork documents one of JR’s monumental installations in Shanghai, where a large-scale portrait of Shi Li, an elderly resident of the city, is progressively integrated into the urban environment. Unlike finished interventions, this “work in progress” image reveals the physical process behind JR’s installations, highlighting the temporary, human, and performative dimension of his practice. The portrait emerges within the dense architectural fabric of Shanghai, confronting the viewer with the coexistence of rapid modernization and personal memory. By focusing on elderly faces marked by time, JR transforms individual histories into monumental urban presences. The contrast between the fragile humanity of the portrait and the constantly evolving cityscape reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in the disappearance of collective memory within contemporary metropolises. This work perfectly illustrates JR’s ability to merge documentary photography, public intervention, and social reflection into images that are both visually striking and conceptually powerful.
Expert opinion
This artwork belongs to The Wrinkles of the City, one of JR’s most important and internationally recognized projects. Developed across multiple cities worldwide, the series focuses on elderly inhabitants whose faces become witnesses to the social, historical, and architectural transformations surrounding them. The Shanghai interventions hold a particularly important place within the project, as they confront one of the fastest urban transformations of the 21st century. This specific “work in progress” image is especially compelling because it documents not only the final visual impact of the intervention, but also the physical and ephemeral process behind JR’s monumental installations. Works from this series are highly sought after due to their strong documentary value, conceptual depth, and direct connection to JR’s most historically significant projects. The use of lithographic printing on BFK Rives paper further reinforces the collectible and museum-quality nature of the edition, while the limited edition of 180 preserves its rarity within the market.
