About the artwork
The Cowgirl is an edition by American artist Will Cotton, blending American pop culture imagery with a sugary, fantastical universe. The work depicts a young woman dressed as a cowgirl, set against a dreamy pastel backdrop typical of Cotton's aesthetic. The character seems to have emerged from a confectionery dream, somewhere between seduction, innocence and parody. Playing on the codes of the Wild West and the pin-up girl, Cotton questions feminine stereotypes and the manufacture of desire in a culture saturated with images. The hyper-realistic, almost icy style accentuates the contrast between apparent gentleness and underlying irony.
Expert opinion
With The Cowgirl, Will Cotton hijacks American iconography with finesse and irony, offering a seductive yet critical vision of the collective imagination. A work as pop as it is disturbing.
About the artist
Born in Massachusetts in 1965, Will Cotton is an American painter renowned for his sweet figurative scenes, populated by women, cotton candy clouds, giant cakes and candy landscapes. Trained at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York, he began to make a name for himself in the 1990s. Inspired as much by classical art as by pop culture, he develops a kitschy, ultra-glamorous imagination that evokes both childlike innocence and advertising fantasies. He has also collaborated with artists such as Katy Perry on visuals for music videos and album covers. His work features in several major contemporary collections.
