About the artwork

A photographic composition captures a meticulously arranged supermarket or convenience store shelf, densely packed with various consumer goods, including bottled water, snacks, beverages, and fresh produce. Within this array, a human figure is camouflaged, body-painted to seamlessly blend with the products and shelving behind. The figure's face, partially visible, is also painted in a manner that integrates with the background, creating an optical illusion of disappearance. The figure stands upright, occupying a vertical section of the shelving from the bottom row of large water bottles to the upper shelves of packaged goods. The body paint replicates the textures, colors, and labels of the surrounding items, making the individual almost indistinguishable from the commercial environment. This technique draws attention to themes of presence and absence, individuality versus conformity, and the pervasive nature of consumer culture. The work references the artistic practice of Liu Bolin, known for his "Hiding in the City" series, where he camouflages himself into various urban and natural environments. The text provided with the work, "Supplies For 2 Months Of Home Quarantine, 2020," contextualizes the scene within the period of global lockdowns, suggesting themes of preparedness, isolation, and the reliance on consumer goods during a crisis.

Expert opinion

This photographic work operates within the conceptual framework of performance art and camouflage photography, a genre that gained prominence through artists like Liu Bolin. It engages with contemporary themes of consumerism, identity in an age of mass production, and the impact of global events on individual existence. The work's market position benefits from its clear conceptual premise and its visual execution, which aligns with established precedents in contemporary art. The edition size of six ensures a degree of exclusivity, which can influence its value in the secondary market.

About the artist

Born in 1973 in Shandong, China, Liu Bolin is an artist who lives and works in Beijing. A graduate of Shandong University of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China, he has since pursued an internationally acclaimed photography practice, notably through the series he began in 2005 entitled Hiding in the City, and has since become known as the "invisible man". His sculptural work also includes human figures made of electronic components. His work, whether photographic or sculptural, suggests a message of humanity in peril, dissolved in an urban, technological heap. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in 2017, the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne in 2018 and the Museo delle Culture in Milan in 2019.
