About the artist
PART ONE, born Enrique Torres in 1959, is an American graffiti artist and one of the pioneers of New York City subway writing. Active from the early 1970s, he became a prominent figure during the golden age of subway graffiti and was a key member of the influential TDS (The Death Squad) crew. Beginning in 1974, PART ONE developed a distinctive approach to lettering, moving between bubble and mechanical styles before creating what he called the “mechanical swirl” in 1976. His innovative letterforms contributed to the development of Wild Style and influenced the first generation of European graffiti writers, notably through their appearance in the seminal book Subway Art. From 1974 to 1985, he was one of the most active and accomplished painters on New York’s subway system. After a brief hiatus, he returned in 1990 and became an important figure in the resurgence of large-scale graffiti murals in Harlem. His work has been documented in Style Wars, Martha Cooper’s Hip Hop Files, and numerous publications devoted to the history of New York graffiti. Today, PART ONE continues to work on walls and canvas, maintaining the lettering and aerosol techniques that established his place in graffiti history.
