About the artwork
Substances is a collaborative work by two major figures in contemporary street art: L'Atlas and Tanc. The piece features a rigid geometric pattern, characteristic of L'Atlas's style, but with a mix of freer, more explosive colors, specific to Tanc's universe. The work plays on the contrasts between geometric order and organic chaos.
Expert opinion
This work perfectly reflects the creative collision of two different artistic personalities. Whereas Tanc prefers to rely on automatism and chance, L'Atlas, with his incredible works of calligraphy, prefers to have as much control as possible over everything he creates.
About the artist
This work is a collaboration between the two artists L'Atlas and Tanc.
Jules Dedet, known as L'Atlas, is a French multidisciplinary artist born in 1978 and based in Paris. Fascinated by line work, he studied calligraphy in many countries and nourished his creativity with different cultures. Inspired in particular by the Kufic script, an Arabic calligraphic style, he develops his plastic art around his own typography. His aim is to create a pictorial language, playing with shapes and letters. Now internationally recognized, the artist started out as a graffiti artist in the 90s, then moved into studio work in the 2000s. L'Atlas' work aims to reconcile city and man, exterior and interior. Playing the role of cartographer, he archives manhole covers for his GPS (Ground Print System) series. He also likes to work with Gaffer, a thick tape that allows him to easily lay down his geometry in the street. A true pillar of the French urban art scene, the artist is a cross between Invader and JR, leaving traces of his passage in public space. Sometimes ephemeral, he performs on the ground in Paris (Esplanade du Centre Pompidou, 2008; Place du Palais Royal, 2011), Toulouse, New York (Washington Square, 2009; Rockefeller Park, 2015) and Seoul (The Seoul Arts Center, 2015). His work has earned him numerous artistic collaborations, notably with Perrier and Agnès b, as well as Faucheur and JonOne. L'Atlas is included in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world (Paris, New York, Busan, Miami, Marrakech).
Born in Paris in 1979, Tanc, born Tancrède Perrot, is a French artist, electronic music composer, draughtsman and graffiti artist, trained at the Ecole supérieure d'arts graphiques Penninghen in Paris. He differs from traditional graffiti artists in that his work is essentially line-based, with an emphasis on spontaneity. He uses rough textures, bright colors and organic forms to create works that, while rooted in urban art, also draw on influences from modern and abstract art. Regularly exhibited in France, Tanc's work has taken on an international dimension, with shows in Germany (Skalitzers Contemporary Art), England (The French Art Studio), Morocco (David Bloch Gallery) and New York (Catherine Ahnell Gallery).
